  1. I bought this coffeemaker for my boyfriend. When I opened the box you could tell that the item had already been removed. When I took the coffeemaker out, to my surprise, there were still grounds in the filter area. Needless to say I was disappointed that I received a “used” coffeemaker. I promptly returned the coffeemaker and bought another at a local store.

  2. UPDATE 2006 part 2 – I take back my claim that they fixed this carafe. The new design seemed to work initially, but now it is right back to spilling half the contents on the kitchen counter. So may I repeat, DO NO BUY THIS WORTHLESS PIECE OF GARBAGE.

UPDATE 2006 – After months of not being able to supply a replacement carafe, the company chose to send me an entirely new coffeemaker. And guess what – they HAVE redesigned the carafe from the first generation! The lid has been reconfigured with a small ball in the pipe to (I assume) regulate the flow of coffee, and I’ve tested it several times, no dribbles….and it pours a LOT quicker. You can also tell the new carafe design from the ancient by the white printed graphics showing the ideal spots to place the arrow for serving or brewing – these did not exist on the first generation.

DO NOT BUY THIS COFFEEMAKER (or particularly, as mentioned above, the 1st generation!) Looks fantastic, but has the worst designed carafe in history. In order to avoid spilling coffee everywhere, you have to either pour it at the same speed as the coffee really brews (which doesn’t always work), or pour it over a sink or swimming pool. I thought “maybe I just got a terrible carafe”, so I call tech support for a replacement. 8 months and 4 periodic calls later, they still do not have a replacement carafe in stock. Instead, they suggest that I cut off the plug on the maker, mail it in and hope for an entire replacement some 2 weeks later. Brilliant customer service.

Oh, and Funkyville was right about the pause & serve – if the carafe isn’t sitting just so perfectly in the unit, the drip stop doesn’t open and you come back to find an enormous mess of coffee and grounds that have overflowed into every nook and cranny of your machine (and there are a lot) requiring the entire thing be scrubbed out.

It does make excellent coffee, though. Too terrible you have to lick it off the kitchen counter.

  3. The coffee maker just stopped working after about a year and a month. So now i am assed out of a expensive coffe maker. It didn’t pour very well either. And its out of warranty, and it just plain dosn’t brew.

  4. I did a lot of research before buying this unit. After 4 months of use I am very disappointed with this product. This is certainly the best looking coffee maker I have ever bought, but that is where the complements stop. The carafe dribbles all over the counter top. I have found this to happen even when I pour VERY slowly. My carafe is also very finicky. It must be placed perfectly or the drip mechanism is not engaged and coffee and coffee ground pour out of the top. HUGE mess. Unfortunately, the complaints do not end there. The steam from the unit condenses behind the carafe and makes a huge puddle every morning. And to be quite honest it doesn’t really brew that fantastic of a cup of coffee. So if you want a excellent looking machine, this is for you. But, if you like a functional machine that is convenient and brews an awesome cup of coffee keep looking. I know I am.

  5. Not sure why, but as I read the reviews, those who have lucky enough to receive one of the rare machines which haven’t yet misbehaved, reckon they are virtuous and careful, and the rest of us are complete ninnies. (Kinda like really fortunate people reckon they are fortunate because they have done everything right. And everyone else is an idiot. Yeah. That’s it.) We had the explosion problem first with two *well-known coffee company* coffeemakers, then, again, with the Delonghi – one our own, and one, my mother’s. We have been meticulously careful about the positioning of all parts, about the grind of the coffee, etc. I suspect the real problem is that these coffeemakers are designed such that the “shower” part of the coffeemaker has been placed too close to the basket and the grounds. If the water goes into the grounds just a bit too quickly (not controllable by the user), I suspect a large airbubble develops – years ago, I had a glass Chemex coffee pot, and could directly observe how the brewing process worked – if an air bubble develops under the shower, and it continues pouring water, grounds will hit the shower and partially plug the holes. Then, the water will finally overflow the basket. It goes wherever it can – basically, everywhere. After patiently cleaning up after the disaster, running water through, brewing coffee again, numerous times, I can only say that you may believe you have made your peace with the machine. Don’t get complacent. It will happen again. Bless *well-known coffee company*, they have taken our coffeemakers back, but the only thing left in their store is a KitchenAid, which from reading Amazon reviews, has similar problems. Where did I place my Chemex? (It is possible, if you choose to ignore the negative reviews, that you will receive one of the rare coffeemakers with all of the tolerances adjusted exactly right. A Monday morning coffeemaker, so to speak. Count yourself lucky, not virtuous!)
